Glenn Jones - The Romance Is Not Over!

Those timeless singers and songs from the incredible '80s keep coming back. And in a time where the future looks bleek when it comes to REAL singers singing REAL songs, they are truly welcome.
One of those timeless voices is Glenn Jones. He's just released an LP of covers called "Forever: Timeless Classics," and it is a treasure trove of memorable hits sung by a classic artist.
Produced by Chris "Big Dog" Davis, "Forever: Timeless Classics" showcases Jones reinventing first-class R&B hits by Stevie Wonder, Bobby Womack, Babyface, Robert Flack, Donnie Hathaway and many others.
"All of the songs on the CD are ones that I have always loved and have been moved by," Jones tells Starpoynt. "What makes them timeless is that they are all compositions of quality that were written well. Fifty years from now ,these songs will still sound great. They are heartfelt songs that lyrically explore deep emotions and relationships that everyone can relate to."
Highlights on "Forever: Timeless Classics" include Stevie Wonder's "Signed Sealed and Delivered," Babyface's "Another Sad Love Song," which was a hit for Toni Braxton, "Anniversary" from Tone, Toni, Tony and Bobby Womack's "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much." The Womack classic takes on a whole new life under Jones' passionate persona - he sings it into a story that doesn't need a flashy video, as his vocals play out the scenes in your head.
"My family is very religious and growing up I was not allowed to listen to secular music. My brother and I would wait until my parents went out to the grocery store or somewhere else and then I would open my drawer of 45s and listen to some of my favorites such as Donnie Hathaway and Bobby Womack. When I first heard 'Trust Me So Much,' it had a familiar feeling because Bobby had come from a Gospel background and his sound had such a Gospel and soulful flavor. The song showed me something new about having a different approach to writing songs."
Also featured on "Forever: Timeless R&B Classics" is Jones' wife, Genobia Jeter Jones, who performs on four of the tracks. They kicked it on two stellar duets: Robert Flack and Donnie Hathaway's hit "Where Is The Love" and the Renee and Angela classic "My First Love."
A native of Jacksonville, FL, Jones spent most of his teen and early adult years working in Gospel ensembles and has had the distinction of working with several revered Gospel icons, such as the Mighty Clouds of

Joy and Rev. James Cleveland, who signed Jones to Savoy Records at the age of 17. Enjoying a career that has spanned more than two decades, Jones' string of hits included the chart topping "We've Only Just Begun (The ROmance Is Not Over)."

"The greatest compliment is to hear that you've still got it and that you can do it just like you used to. I have been blessed to work with the best and I try to keep quality in all my records. I hope when people hear this new record that they will say ... 'This guy has done great records all though the years!' The industry likes to divide everyone into categories like new school and old school, but when the music is good it is just good. It is not about demographics but more about whether or not the music sounds and feels good and whether or not it moves you. I want to keep on top of my game and to continually sound fresh and I feel that I have achieved this with this CD."

More from Glenn Jones...

Star - Things aren't like they used to be, and add the fact that you don't have a major label behind you, although Shanachie is a solid independent. So what are your plans to get the word out and promote the new LP?
GJ - We're trying to get out as much as possible. W're getting into the markets and doing shows and letting people know I am out there still doing my thing. We're just trying to make people aware I have a new product.

Star - Have you selected any one song as a single?
GJ - "Where Is The Love?"

Star - Any personal favorites?
GJ - "Where Is The Love?" is one of my favorites. It's a great song and it gave me the chance to do a record with my wife. It's always a challenge to take an old song and make it your own. "You're Sweet, You're Fine, You're Everything" - that was from a group called Tomorrow's Promises. No one ever covered the song. It was out back in the '70s. It's a really cool song. "Another Sad Love Song" - I love that track too.

Star - How did you choose the songs for the LP?
GJ - They were songs that I really liked. A lot of times when you do covers you go for Motown songs or Philly International songs. I didn't want to do just ballads. I wanted to keep a lot of the songs uptempo. But mainly, these are songs I really love. I've always been a fan of Donnie Hathaway and Bobby Womack, so it was a perfect opportunity for me to sing their stuff.

Star - What do you listen to?
GJ - All the people I can sing... mostly old school stuff. Stevie, Donnie, Mint Condition. I do like Ne-Yo and some of the new stuff.

Star - What is your take on the music industry right now?
GJ - Corporate America is running it and messed it up. It has to be about money ... I understand that, but it also has to be about the art. It needs to be the artist's not the producer's. A lot of them don't even know music, or can't play instruments... they program a beat or rip something from an old 12 inch. Back in the day, you really had to bust your brain to write and rewrite. You wrote real lyrics and worked on your chorus and your bridge. Most of these cats are more DJs than anything. They know how to make people dance. But to really learn your craft and leave a mark - from a creative standpoint rather than whoever made the most money - that's what's most important.

Star - Advice to young cats?
GJ - Study your craft. Be ready. There are a lot of people who get deals. It's one thing to be in the studio and there you can create magic. But you have to be able to get out there and do your thing live... don't get caught up in all of the hype and the bling. Because that's when you will take your attention and focus elsewhere and you will lose your edge. Develop yourself as an artist and then let everything else fall into place.
